Jewellery making classes
Ever wanted to make your own sterling silver and copper stacking rings, earrings or necklaces Then this is the course for you.
In this full day course, held at the stunning Walford Mill in Wimborne Dorset, you will start at the very beginning with a brief introduction to the essential tools used by Silversmiths and jewellers around the world. The ‘Introduction to stacking rings’ course is designed for complete beginners who want to learn the basic silversmithing techniques. You will make 3 stacking rings (1 copper and 2 sterling silver) to either gift or wear with pride at the end of the day. You will be guided through the start to finish process from measuring and calculating the correct size, to cutting, texturing and preparing silver for soldering, through to shaping and forming your rings.
The earring and pendant/necklace workshops are available to those who may have a little experience in making jewellery or attended one of the stacking rings classes, although not essential. You will be guided through the processes to make creations from a selection of designs using copper and silver. Class guidance notes will be provided, and all materials (silver and chain, etc) will be charged as extra on the day.
The courses will include;
Introduction to the tools of silversmithing and how to correctly use them to go onto making more goodies at home. (All tools will be provided on the day for you to use).
Introduction to texturing metals; hammering, line hammering, stamping etc
Introduction to measuring, cutting and preparing metals for soldering and joining.
Introduction to filing, sanding, polishing and finishing - to achieve a professional finish.
For the class you will be asked to wear comfortable clothing and to avoid loose fabric around your wrists as you will be using open flames to solder. If you have long hair, you are asked to wear away from your face, i.e. tied back, to avoid damaging your lovely locks. Similarly, scarves and other long neck adornments and wrist bracelets should be removed before starting the workshop. You will be provided with all tools, and solders.
IMPORTANT: Silver will need to be purchased on the day, (priced according to weight required). Copper will be provided as part of the course for the stacking ring class. As a guide, for 2 silver stacking rings, this will be between £10 – £15. Payment can be made by cash or card on the day. A selection of chains will be available to purchase for the pendant making class.
An apron will be provided on the day to protect your clothing, as it can get rather dusty when sanding and filing, but feel free to bring your own.
We will break for lunch, and a quick cuppa if the class feels necessary, where you can take a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful grounds at the Mill and discover some of the fabulous creations by resident makers.
Class hours: 10am – 4.15pm
A downloadable voucher will be emailed to you once purchased (Please ensure that you include within your order details below) and will need to be presented on the day of the course. So if you wanted to gift this class to someone special, you will have something to print off.
